Researches

There are of course, researches for the final major project, there are idea researches for the art style, the story, what thing I should do with the project. Then there are the production research, it means there are photographs for the background and characters, what kind of animation needed to do, researching small stuff for the assets in the background for better

1 - ideas and inspirations Research

Even thought my designs were sometimes interesting, but some of the character designs had to change for sticking for the theme of designs or environments that based off. There are lot more for just researching for the elements of the design.

As research purpose only, I took inspirations from some of official arts or illustrations from video games, books, or animated shows/films that was online by people or the creators, or I got from the library or the book store. I did learnt about a few things on how the characters were designed in different ways to confirmed which was is the best for fitting in the audiences, and how the illustrations can tell how the characters fit in the theme that the creators attempt to put in.

1.1 Artstyle research

1.1.1 Pixel Art

Pixel art was the part of the big art style where people give the appeal on, it exists along the way with causal animations or gaming, and it is important for the

1.1.2 Memphis Design

image.png

Memphis design was made from the 1980s, and it is created by the Memphis Group, is one of the most instantly recognizable design styles.

The design blends Art Deco with pop art, and the Memphis Design movement initiated by the Memphis Milano group is still relevant in today’s design till the 2000s and the 2010s.

The Memphis design was the oppose to brutalism and post-war architecture, interior and product design. The design style leands the streamlined geometry of art deco design and the eletric colour of day-to-day object. It often described as kitschy and tacky because bright colour, geometric shapes, strong patterns, stripes, clashing hues, abstract design, and plastic laminate.

1.1.3 Axel Scheffler

Axel was a famous award winning illustrator from Germany living in the UK, who had helped Julia with the famous children's book like "The Gruffalo", and so many other children's books that from the 1990s to 2000s, he also involved animating the series after his books, which fitting in as the animator.

The art style he had approach was colour painted illustrations and expressive characters for easier on the younger audiances and it was not too saturated or to muted like the beige colour palettes on every designs during the modern times. It brings me joy and simpler times for every art style i encountered.

image.png

1.2 posters and illustrations

There were some designs need some inspirations for the poster designs and illustrations post, which had added for the important part of the variety for how the designs were made for the magazines and illustrations to had targeted on the 13+ sometimes a younger audances, which let me think of which style needed to combined for the final design idea for the posters.

LEGOs are the target on the general audiences for the advertisements, which almost everyone knows a lot about the brand, I also had a character that based off "The LEGO movie" protagonists.

image.png

During the 90s to 2000s, Sony and Nintendo was in a console war for which game and console were the best to the audiences with the rise of RPG, FPS, , it also had a switch on technology improvements, had a lot of film of how scary the techs were to humans, so there were a lot of dark and edgy theme on the marketing, it makes a lot of "edgy" of ads on posters, tv commercials, game console promotions.

The whole promotions are mainly targeted on boys since people thought play video games is a "boy" thing during the 80s to 2000s, I kind of like that how the switch on technological advance people had seen on that time. It had included the films and tech advertisements were in dark theme futuristic, glossy feeling on how the tech effect on humanity with the rapid evolutions of digital tech from 90s to early 2010s.

Old futurisms are constant fascinating for me, which thinking of the today's world look like that from the predictions from the 20th centuries. I had though of the 50s to 60s futurism was great, the slick designs, the tech that was close to what we had today. You know, it is a what if for today's design was fitting the way people predict in the 50s to 60s.

1.3 Games/Shows/CGI films/Animated Films

Lot of them were came from a series of either artbook, trailers, and some of the important things that exist during the development of the whole thing in the

There were backgrounds from some disney shows that I can take notes from for how the colours and shapes were match with the theme and the art style from different creators of that show. Some angler, some round, fitting that special art style that they had made into the show and visually impact the audiances.

It was an official art book from the video game "Date Everything", which showcased the characters' development from their initial appearances to their final design when at the final game. I had a bit of learning on how the art group behind the indie game had changed from how the assets between outfits and appearances were based on the house appliances or other objectives.

I also learn was about their overalls and body shapes besides the Hollywood body standard, which made it easier to distinguish different parts of the characters when I design on Procreate, then soon after for the illustration book I was going to make when characters were capable for pose the character when testing on the free time I had.

(Even though the game itself can't be completely targeted for achieving all love endings of characters, and the game can promote platonic relationships, or friend or hate endings with them. Results make it an asexual, queers and ally-friendly dating sim game.)

Moodboard research 3.jpg

These were Jin Kim's example stuff, and he is the person who was behind a couple of Disney movie with lots of character sheets in a different angles, expressions, and poses to easier to guide how to make the characters during the productions of animations, game developments, or making comics. I can learnt from a bit how they were pose in an expression way.

IF, as known as "Imagination Friend" was the 2024 film mixed with the characters are the different time Imagination Friends, trying to find a new kid as plan for the replacing the old friend that they had forgotten them before, but failed, lead to the team head back to the original kid who imagines them out to revive the memories. It all lead to a girl who came to the granny's place to stay for the sickness of one of the family member.

I then think, what if the imagined friends were visible to everyone, like how the kid who imagined them, the parents, the people around it saw the Imagined Friend. It is basically a rework version of "IF" which instead of someone know the Imagine Friends, everyone saw it form and hang out with the people.

This is the Gullermo del toro's Pinocchio, it had the story that Disney won't show from the classic Pinocchio, with the show of death of certain characters on screen, had the discussion of the fear of humanity to unexpecting things or beings are alive and talkative to others, which had the idea for giving life for the characters for the story progression was from Pinocchio, which how human fear things that weren't in the place were alive from the start. The poster below is a DVD Kaset of Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, which had different variants of the posters of them for people to choose which one is the best for seeing in their room.

Undertale and Deltarune are indie games made by a small team of people lead by Toby Fox, inspired from the Earthbound series, and it was his idea since the 2000s, also make the game without the knowledge of coding or any fancy tools to make the game. The games were influential for the people online, including me, the game included a lot of routes can take for the choice based RPG, which either pathway can changed a lot of people's world of view or discover what they had done on character's emotions with the choice for them from the protagonist.

There are a few no commentary gameplay videos that takes up on over 10 hours of playing when achieve the true pacifist ending of the game, which including side stories and quests for the characters that people won't learnt about them when play normally.

Spoilers for the ending of the Genocide route of Undertale, at the end of it one character named 'Chara' appear as the cuprite of flowy and said the player for finish the genocide that they are satisfy about that, and proceed to kill the player. It is a simple jump scare for people who run genocide route and rethink what they had done. (also suppose to delete the game but failed in the coding)

I also think of the new way for the "what if...?" story, which had involved to spearing every character alive which I had created before, making it a fair deciding to including some of the plot from a game and had similar format for the game.

There were a lot of animations and designs can be inspired to make illustrations for a different ways for promo different brands and logos to the specific audiences. It took a long time to think of and idea with researches, mindmaps, and pitch to the people what the designers and animators were think. And there are some older commercials on TV sometimes collaborated real-life and fictional characters, this is one of the examples of NBA and Cartoon Network shows together, where the basketball stars interview some of the Cartoon Network characters from the 70s to the 2000s. It was mainly to increase the view from parents and the younger audience.

The Wonderfully Weird World Of Gumball, which previously named The Amazing World of Gumball, is an animated series started since 2010, mixed with different style of animations and CGI, with multitude of characters that exists and memorable characters that were doing random stuff every episode of the show, it is fun to watch for kids and teens for the gags, humours, story, and the environment. There is also some of the obvious jokes that reflected on the real world like AI, brainrots and trends on social medias, issues from people, and more. Some people thought that is too 'woke' for kids, it is from some of the white conservative people speaking, I have no issues for watching the show when I was young.

This is a behind the scene of the recent released animated film 'GOAT', I did not see that on theatres but the animations and art style on portraying character designs and background were amazing in the Sony pictures animations universe, and I mostly focus on the visuals on the characters for how some of the theme works for the setting of the film.

Super Mario RPG is one of the small underrated game at best, and I am looking for inspirations from the battle mechanics and the isometric camera view of the whole game. The character angles are facing on eight ways to match how the controller works in the SNES and the remakes on Nintendo Switch; as my idea on the character sprites are facing limited in four ways to match the computer controller like up down left right, unless there are emotes and expressions on the characters.

1.4. Small indie Animations on Youtube

There are many animations done by other creators and teams on YouTube, there are story-telling animations, some were animated music videos or 'AMV' in sort, and some were normal short animations post on Youtube, not on TV. I search the animations for amaing visuals, animations, background, music and sounds, and the plot of the whole story, which either a subtle hint of what ever happens in the characters; then I use them as the inspirations for the character story, animations, and the background of the game I am doing for that.

This is the animated short on YouTube name 'Mija', and it promotes and raises awareness on transgender community for the people, showing how trans people feel when making the decision to reveal that they are transgender to their closest ones ones and have the procedure of changing their overalls in a right body that they comfortable with. And I focus more on the backgrounds of the story where it is bright in colour while the characters are slight mute in colour, which has the easy distinguish in the overall animated short.

There are a couple of the animations to either on animated music videos or simple animated short to symbol about something much deeper and darker in the depths of the story.

'Tic Toc' is an animated music video by Klea, there are not much context of the story but to show that people have fun in the night club during midnight with the music with the catchy tone.

Unline 'The Brightest Star', the whole animations and story seems innocent and magical at first for a kid running around, fallen in a mysterious cave, encountered with an Eldridge creature and have the time around the sky without her parents notice, and at the end the star had shine for that, also her parents are looking of her after hours gone by, which means the subtle detail that show that the young girl had died in the cave and her body is still in that same place for hours without parents notice until it is too late.

1.4.1 Sarah Mae Schmidt

Sarah is a US animator who lives in Chicago, and she has produced animations that are unique from the people, her animation style and the proportions of the buildings are memorable for the people who are watching her animations. Which every animation can take up months or years to develop, ever since she was at college in 2011.

The most recent animation is Vegeversary, released in 2022 on her YouTube channel, but most of her animations are short forms and are on her social media platforms, for which I took a few notes on how I am going to make about how the animations on the character sprites of moving differently depend on how they are presented.

1.4.2 Cas van de Pol

Cas van de Pol is a Dutch animation creator and director who has an animation team that creates some memorable recap animations and artwork for the audience. There are some bold drawings, colours, and animations to recap a lot of media that is famous online, especially a video game, a film, or a show. It is just a recap of a story that is on one plot only; it has retained the original things that slow production to keep on the pacing, and catching up a lot of the famous media on the internet when making small animations.

There is a YouTube channel that portrays that what if humans are in different situations, it is called "If Humans", it showed that how the situations can stretched from the things we had done. Mainly had different things that happen on humans in the current society.

1.5 Project need tutorial

This is the guidance of making references sheet for the characters that I am going to designed on Procreate, which had a lot of the time that were use without any colours applied in some case for only character shapes. From the character expressions, full 360 body view for the base model, then the important part of the arms and the legs for the basic model.

There is a video about the grid line that helped me a lot through with the basics of value line on drawings and animations, I will get used to the important part of the value line of the background which had the perspective needed from the line. It is helpful for me to produce the illustration book with background, there were some basic lining and 3D feeling in a 2D world without feeling flat for the production.

2 research during productions

2.1 Character (pose, design, colour)

There are some of the research revolve around character designs, poses references, and colours, despite I had done before when dealing with the character sheets and their concept art, and when having to deal with the projects, I focus on the main casts and important side character appearances on different senecios.

Also a lot of inspirations were from different series or actual things in my room for character design, mostly for overall of the character, then had improvise on clothing, expressions and colour, a lot of the time they are some contacts for how they will effect the game design and placements for the game.

2.1.1 Character design inspirations

Maverick Fleetwood’s design design inspirations

IMG_2883.JPG

Maverick's design was focus on the band based character, also it is an afro character, which a lot focused on a couple of the black based character like Spider punk and Clawdeen Wolf, which also focused on how his clothing had hints of drums and colours around the 80s rock band outfits, there is one band is named "Bon Jovi", one of the band member had the stripe trousers with belt slide down, so he going to be one of the base colours for that.

Lykke Godt's design inspirations

Character_Inspirations 1.JPG

Lykke was inspired for a normal lego set and a bundle of scrap Lego and the Lego saparater as the leg part since it look like a heel in perspective, I think that's it, and after one suggestions for be more specific for the design and what set they based off, I thought of "The LEGO movie" characters are fitting in the theme have big names and a bundle of different sets of Legos that existed in the places. Also their name is the origin name of the name LEG GODT, but with the replace of the first word as Lykke (which is a Danish name meaning of Happiness).

I did not think of the specific gender of the character since there are both boy and girl character in the LEGO brand, and the building block thing is pretty wide in both gender, so I'm just go with under the trans umbrella of being an Agender character.

Vos siblings' design inspirations

306086891-1280px.jpg

There were a bit of extend on the siblings, since they looks similar with the hawk look. it also focused on the important part of expressions and the look a bit close to humans as well. The mask that cover their faces make them similar to the work I had done as well.

Grace's design inspirations

This was the last character that I had revived, so I got the character off the save file from the game Stardew Valley, and mixed with the real me. Which created for the alternate universe where the "What If...?" have.

Que Yu (Edward) Ting's design inspirations

IMG_2887.JPG

He is mainly referenced on street fighter characters and Old Master Q (yes, it is his english translated name), which is had a limited from his origins from Hong Kong and China with clothing brand and his existence from over 100 years. Which had a bit of expanding on colours and patterns on the clothes.

Bently's design inspirations

IMG_2884.JPG

Bently's design is supposed to be inspired for comfort and approachable to the audiences, adding he is minimum for the overall for his design of the couch bed, it also easy to narrow down for how his design is.

Pernell Strike's design inspirations

IMG_2885.JPG

Pernell is the base inspirations on the boxing dummy for the base line, also thinking of the important part of his design going to be endurances, boxing related characters from media franchises, which is the result for him to have the boxing gloves and a spare boxing gloves for others to train with him. Then I think, this ain't do much of the design just the boxing dummy, he had no top to cover his body, so I'm going with the logic of the boxing bag and the crash test dummy for the additional references on the character he is already, with additional stitches, arm braces, and the line where he can bend in and out like normal.

Izzie's design inspirations

IMG_2882.JPG

Izzie's design inspirations were mainly focused on the shape of the cylinder and the design on the tissue holder. I had though of dress is fitting for Izzie's design, so I search the dress design through history and the most fitting was the 50s fashion website with the woman's dressings, the design are simple at the same time have the colourful things as accessories for the dresses too.

Radio tissue box.JPG

There are more about Izzie's design beside being the fancy cylinder tissue box, I can base her dress on other tissue boxes that are round in corners and more like a crafty characteristics on her as seems, I got the radio tissue box that I got from the thrift store, it was pretty and round, and reminds me of one of the dancer from Just Dance 2020 when applied on Izzie's design. Another idea for Izzie's dress is about the crafts tissue boxes, they are quite unbonded of designs I can nitpicked from, like either designed into festivals, cartoon animals, monster with googly eyes etc... So I'm just combined the based design, despite it will be an issue for the consistencies when design the same thing in different angle.

Screenshot 2026-04-16 145007.png

The Great Fairy of Life's design inspirations

IMG_2886.JPG

The Great Fairy of life, as the character is considered the manager of life and death for the fictional character who is important for the story. Her design and personality are based on The Blue Fairy from Pinocchio and Rosalina from the Super Mario series. That idea led me to make her like a mother figure who tolerates everything that happens to the character. The Great Fairy of Life can be serious when there are some issues with the artist creators that, with heart and soul, turn the characters into different or badly written ones, which she lets some of the characters manage on the spot.

20260407_170120.jpg

There are many smaller side characters I could make them from basically everything, like the flower paintings on the wall, which let me design characters from the stem and the head is around the of the flower petals, and some of the children's toys most of the components around them were bright in colour while their main clothings are boring.

Screenshot 2026-05-16 at 00.25.46.png

This is a "Random Animal Generator" website, it is useful for me to create creatures with mixes of lots of living creatures like mammals, birds, incest, reptiles, and fishes, generated with the spin of the button, it help me to get out of the art block for character creations for small characters, pretty useful and resourceful to let me imagine the creature with some extra research of what kind of animal is that.

2.1.2 character poses

IMG_2985.jpg

This website helps me a lot for finding the resting pose or some of the animations pose of the characters, and it is ruled that I could had done easier with the right proportions of the characters when designing them.

There are some of technical things that I needed to be done for the character sprites was animations, and the choice of pixel art animations has some of the work that needed to be done for that

2.2 Background design and assets

Background design was allegedly were needed for some of the scenes, I might searched for buildings or actual places from the map for inspirations, or maybe adding buildings to photo bashed in the background for matching the realism look for the background. There were some of the background I can take notes from some shows and movies.

There were some actual learning for how the colours were been done for the background for matching the theme that I had to draw in the certain art style. Either photo bashed or drawn out.

Colour research is important for me to deal with when design the background, often times it was from the other background from different series, some were from actual places that people took picture when walk around the places and photo bashed into, some were from the "colour hunt" which is useful for making the base colour of the theme then improvise by the colour.

Color Hunt Palette ffc570efd2b05477921a3263.png

2.2.1 image and illustration on websites

Sometimes I did use free images from the websites that people put on for others as references for designs and illustrations, and I had to be aware for the images generated from ai; I am avoiding as much generated images and design as possible by isolated in types of things I had to search and the selected parts of the illustrations as the base line of the design.

These two images were from Freepik and it is the use as references for the amusement park and the circus background area where the team explore like in the middle to end of the journey, and I am trying to think of a more flashy and crowded tone for the place as the whole since there are some of the locations can be lots of people when there is an amusement park and the circus as two focus point of the background.

IMG_2827.JPG

This is about the auto Mahjong sorter, there is a rotations at the centre for get the right amount for the cards without reorganise the cards every round, and obviously, the machine is more expensive then the normal one that came with the cards, dices, and cards.

Then I had the idea for the base model of the middle for that, and I think to for the retrieving, sorting and eject the card as the

—Pngtree—wave shading_5427429.png

This dots image was from the Png site where I downloaded and put as the pattern the road side of 'In-Between Village', it is easy to just find something easy to do like patterns like that, including books, leaves, grasses, brick, and more, I'm just finding images or brushes to do it and had slight alterations after I photo bashed the patterns into artworks.. But I am also aware that the patterns can be AI in a way, so I am keep my eye on that.

These three images were used separately as backgrounds, which let me design the background a bit more efficiently and finish it faster, even though I had to prioritise efficiency and a high-quality art format for the whole background. The two on the left were use as the base of the end of The Void of the Clouds, which has a chair with pillows, which I circle with a red pen for highlight for knowing myself which one is used in the background assets, the reason is obvious to save some time, also layout for the concept art for the backgrounds that I had.

And the right pattern is use in a couple of background design on the in-between worlds, where it is between a real world and fictional world, where materials start to change and resemble human imaginations towards surroundings.

1111_R1IgREFOIDM1Ny0xMw.jpg

This is a cup for the one scene of the animations that is needed to be done by then.

2.2.2 Photography

I did get outside and took a bunch of photos of the church, as well as some of the surrounding buildings and shops, for photo editing to use in posters and the background of the game. There are also some screenshots from Google Earth for easier finding of any building, which is helpful for photo bashing things into backgrounds as a reference for the background.

Outdoor

20260314_154349.jpg

There are some of the photos I taken from real places and some were from google earth map since I don't take much walks around the streets around city areas and mostly I had to photo edited on either on procreate or Photoshop to match the theme that I am pin point at.

Indoor

My room sometimes needed for a basic references for different angle from different character, it is more easier for have an each angle of the scene in one room of the game. (even thought I only pick only a few elements for the scene since it is too chaotic for the position of the stuff I had in my room.

20260314_182218.jpg
20260314_123630.jpg

There are some more about from my room which was from the IKEA display sets and some of the smaller indoor stuff that can be make as the references of the whole room of a different situation.

2.4 Story Telling and Writing research

The told of compiling story is need to getting through with characters and world building take place in that world that I had placed the characters in. I had to take advice from people online, mainly on YouTube. It feel better for taking interest from the audiences and myself.

This is the first video that I had search was for the listening about the advice for making comics. Talking about how the story needs to slow down, and how the dpi had to increase when producing a page of the book

Also, I rewind the story I had done before during the projects which had to change from that when doing this project.

2.5 apps Tutorials

There are a couple of animation that I can be done on different apps and some free website online for experimenting for some new part of animating on basic function, like animation on Photopea, even though I will do animation on Photoshop in college library when out of lessons.

And there is the issue that I had faced was how the clip mask animations on solid object in After Effects, despite I knew how to clip mask on editing app, I had a struggle for making a clip mask, so I search online and found out that how to make a proper clip mask on After Effects in a Youtube video, it show that is need to click F4 for open for the clip mask effect and make a masking effect over the needed to be edited animations.

2.6 Musics and audio

There are tons a ways to get the music, it is either from a licenced playlist from other music artists from the official website, which costed a lot with the royalty to the original artist and producer; and the royalty free from the library of audios and musics on YouTube creator and BBC, or created by myself on some free audio editor, remaking the royalty free musics or using some free sound track to make one.

image.png
Screenshot 2026-04-29 142144.png

The website on the left is Soundtrap, which it already had a lot of music and sound in the sound library, and it can let me create my own music and beat with the keyboard, but my music skill has be depilated even since I abandoned from my practise on music since the tween to early teen years, so I use the sound library as the base and putting the icing on the cake.

The website on the right is the sound editor, it only focuses on the editing the existing music and sounds that have been done by others, I tested it and I am still do not get it.
